The Padmakara Translation Group
A multinational group of translators
The Translation Group consists of translators and editors of different nationalities working under the direction of Tibetan masters Pema Wangyal Rinpoche and Jigme Khyentse Rinpoche. The translators, with qualifications in a number of disciplines, have all been studying and practising Tibetan Buddhism for many years, and most have completed one or more three-year retreat courses under the guidance of Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche and Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, two of the most respected Tibetan scholars of recent times.
Inspired by the non sectarian tradition, the Translation Group strives to make available, in the greatest number of languages possible, the essence and the depth of the texts studied and practised within the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. To begin with, Padmakara has focused on translating those texts which were recommended by great Tibetan masters such as Kyabje Kangyur Rinpoche, Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche, and Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.
The Padmakara Translation Group benefits from the unique advantage of being able to work closely with authentic Tibetan masters who have themselves received, studied and practised the transmissions and oral instructions so necessary for a proper understanding of the texts, and also have long experience of the West. The Group also enjoys access to an extensive library of Tibetan texts and an archive of recorded oral explanations (described in the Resources: The Tibetan Library and The Audio Library). Members of the Translation Group work in teams on each project and maintain frequent and fruitful exchanges of ideas on the translation of specific Buddhist terminology.
Dedication to accuracy & clarity
The Padmakara Translation Group has a distinguished reputation for its translations of Tibetan texts and teachings and is renowned for its clear and accurate literary style. Padmakara has become a trusted authority, setting a standard for Tibetan translation. Since 1980, more than 50 book-length texts, as well as a large number of practice manuals, have been translated into English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Finnish, Russian, and other languages.
