Sitapaila project: Construction of a Tibetan monastery in Nepal

Sitapaila construction

Construction of Sitapaila,
a Tibetan monastery in Nepal

Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche is one of the most venerated and respected masters in the Tibetan buddhist tradition and without doubt, one of the most important lamas of our time. He is one of the teachers of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to whom he regularly transmits rare teachings of which he is holder, and especially those of the Great Perfection (Dzogchen).

At the time of the invasion by the Communist Chinese troops, Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche left Tibet and settled in the north of Nepal in the border region and very secluded area of Solukhumbu where he spent many years in retreat. There he founded the monastery of Thubten Chöling, now home to a flourishing community of monks, nuns and lay practitioners.

Over time, the monastery of Thubten Chöling has become too small for the number of people that want to dedicate themselves to study and practice under the guidance of Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche. This is the reason for which Kyabje Rinpoche has initiated an important construction project of a new monastery in the valley of Kathmandu. The new monastery at Sitapaila will provide a place of study and practise for Tibetan and Western monks, including new refugees, and will help preserve the spiritual monastic tradition in one of the most sacred Buddhist regions in Nepal. Solukhumbu will then be dedicated for the nuns.

Current status

Construction of the monastery has already begun. The surrounding fence has been erected, the foundation has been laid and the main temple and buildings are now being built. Depending on the funds, construction could be finished by 2007.

Financial requirements

This project requires the necessary funds for the construction and furnishing of the gompa. KRF will support this project through Songtsen's Fondation Padmasambhava, under the aegis of Fondation de France, by collecting donations and by assuring its dispatch to Nepal.
