Lumbini project: Construction Do-nga choling, a monastic institute in Lumbini, Nepal

(Dzarong Thubten Mindrol Do-nga Choling Boudha Vihar)

The construction of a monastic institute for the preservation of Tibetan culture and tradition.

Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche is one of the most respected masters in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition and irrefutably one of the most important lamas of our time. He is one of the teachers of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, to whom he regularly transmits rare teachings of which he is holder, and especially those of the Great Perfection (Dzogchen).

At the time of the invasion by the communist Chinese troops, Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche left Tibet and settled in the north of Nepal in the border region and secluded area of Solukhumbu where he spent many years in retreat. There he founded the monastery of Thubten Chöling, now home to a flourishing community of over 700 monks, nuns and lay practitioners.

Over time, the monastery of Thubten Chöling has become too small for the number of people that want to dedicate themselves to study and practice under the guidance of Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche. This is the reason for which Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche has initiated an important construction project of a new monastery in Lumbini.

The new monastery will welcome and give shelter to those interested in studying under the guidance of Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche, and particularly to new refugees arriving from Tibet. Currently there is not adequate accommodation and resources for the number of people who wishes to dedicate themselves to a monastic education. The monastery will provide a place of study and practise mainly for monks, including new refugees (the nuns will remain at Solukhumbu, in the North-West of Nepal) and will help preserve the spiritual monastic tradition in one of the most sacred Buddhist regions in Nepal.

Current status

Construction of the monastery has already begun. The land where the monastery is being built has been donated. The surrounding fence has been built, the foundation has been laid and preparations are being made for the main construction. Depending on the funds, construction could be finished by 2007.

Financial requirements

This project requires the necessary funds for the construction and furnishing of the gompa. KRF Development will support this project by collecting the required funds and by assuring its dispatch to Nepal. KRF Development will assist the Board of Do-nga Choling, through the Kangyur Rinpoche Foundation and Fondation Padmasambhava, registered with the Fondation de France, and will oversee the construction of the monastery until completion.
