Maratika school project: Repair of a primary school and construction of a secondary school for a poor Nepali village

Description

The Maratika School Project endeavors to provide assistance for the over 300 children in Maratika, a remote village in Nepal. This rural village is home to a very poor community. Their only primary school is in urgent need of repair. The building is in very bad condition, with large cracks running through the stone-mud walls. The instable supports have made the school unsafe for use. Currently, the classes have had to be conducted outside in the open air. This means that when it is too hot or when it is raining, children can not go to school. $2,000 USD has already been contributed to the project but it is not enough for the repairs. Restoration work has already started but an estimated $5,550 USD will be needed to complete the project.

The second project is for the other local school in Maratika which provides education up to the 9th class level. Unless students finish 11th class, they will not be able to get jobs. The families can not afford to send the children to Katmandu. The urgent request is to upgrade three more classes. This will involve building more classrooms and providing salaries for five more teachers for three years. After three years, it is possible that the Nepali government will take over the cost of the teachers’ salaries.

Location

Maratika, East Nepal

Project purpose

The purpose of the Maratika project is to enable children to receive a proper education by repairing a structurally damaged primary school in an impoverished Nepali village. As well, it also aims to help ensure the future employment of the students by constructing a secondary school, which will provide the necessary qualifications to either find employment or to continue onto higher education.

Current Status

Restoration of the primary school has already begun. Funds are needed to continue the restoration and to commence the construction of the secondary school.

Development plan / progress

Once full funds are received, construction and restoration could be completed by spring 2006.
