Guru Lhakang gompa: Darjeeling, West Bengal, India

Guru Lhakang Guru Lhakang (literally The Temple of the Master) owes its name to the large statue of the great master Padmasambhava housed in its temple. Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, was the Indian master that introduced Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century. In the beginning of the 1980’s, His Holiness the 14th Dalaï Lama entrusted the management to Kungo Nyima Zangpo, who then equally took charge of the Darjeeling monastery. The monastery is located at the entry of Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Situated about a half-day journey from Darjeeling and linked by a major road, this small monastery is completely connected to life at OKC.

For many years, Kungo Nyima Zangpo worked to restore the gompa’s buildings and temple, which were in very poor condition, in order to restore the gompa and to improve living conditions of the young monks. Unfortunately, while his vision was in the process of perfect achievement, he unexpectedly passed away. In November 2000, the entire monastery paid him homage during a week of ceremonies. Now, the finances of this small monastery are now dependent upon its "mother" monastery of Darjeeling, Orgyen Kunzang Chökhorling, which now helps to take care of the maintenance and management of the Guru Lhakang gompa. To deal with the expenses linked to life at the monastery, particularly for new monks, we have launched a campaign to find new sponsors.
