Dharma practice: Prayers for peace

An Essential Summary of the Twenty-One Praises to Tara

Om jetsunma pama drölma la chak tselo

Om Holy Tara, noble one, to you I bow down.

Chaktsel drölma tare pamo

I bow to you O saviour, Tara, brave one.

Tuttarayi jigkun selma

With “Tuttara” you banish all fears,

Ture donnam thamche terma

With “Ture” richly giving all things.

Soha yiger chela rabdu

I worship you by crying “Soha”!

Once when the incomparable Lord Atisha was staying at Nyetang, he fell ill. When he prayed to the Venerable Tara, she gave him a prophetic instruction saying that he should recite, in the course of a single day, the twenty-one praises to Tara ten thousand times. Lord Atisha replied that in one day he would never manage such a task, and he asked her to grant him a skilful method. In response to his request, this extremely condensed form of the twenty-one praises was taught to him by Tara herself, on account of which, it possesses a very great power of blessing.
